âLet's question the witnesses,â Penny said to the doctor. Strange, she thought at the same moment, that the police still had not arrived.
On the other hand, even in the 21st century one was at the mercy of the forces of nature when they acted up as they were doing tonight. Presumably the officers Dr. Stiller had called were as stuck in their vehicles as any civilian motorist who had gotten lost in the raging snowstorm.
âThe suspects, you mean to say?â the doctor replied grimly.
Penny nodded. People can be so different, she pondered. This man was not nearly as eager as she to solve this murder case into which they had both stumbled by accident. You could tell Dr. Stiller took his medical duties very seriously, but otherwise wanted to get off this train as quickly as possible.
Penny, on the other hand... what exactly did she want? She could not deny that she was frightened, but there was something else, too. Something that was much stronger than any fear. The desire to hunt, the insatiable urge to uncover what the heck had happened on this train, and the ambition to solve this case before she had to hand it over to the police.
There was certainly not much time left before the officers would finally arrive. And she absolutely wanted to talk to the four suspects first. At least briefly.
Maybe it was ridiculous to want to play the amateur sleuth in this murder case. It was a strange, no, a bizarre case, certainly a good three sizes too big for her. But still, she decided, I'll give it a try. What have I got to lose?
Your life, maybe? A warning voice spoke up in the back of her head. The murderer was among these four people. He knew how to hide himself well, but he had also proven that he was ruthless and would take any risk if someone got in his way. Madeleine had already paid for her suspicions with her life. Penny had to be careful that she did not suffer the same fate.
âLet's start with the assistant,â she said to Dr. Stiller. âAfter that, we'll take on the family.â
The doctor nodded wordlessly, and they got going together.
Christiane Schneiders had obeyed Penny's request to remain in her compartment. She seemed to have fully recovered from the shock she had suffered at the sight of her murdered boss. She was talking on her cell phone when Penny and Dr. Stiller entered the compartment. Her voice still sounded a little rough, but otherwise the assistant had probably adopted the motto The Show Must Go On.
The phone conversation seemed to be about a legal dispute with some Chinese supplier to the Salmann group of companies.
âWe really need to talk to you,â Penny interjected when Schneiders stopped talking for a moment in order to listen to her interlocutor.
The assistant nodded her understanding, promised the Chinese guy she would call him back as soon as possible, and then switched off her cell. Her eyes looked tired, but still she looked at Penny expectantly.
